If I knew they weren't being disingenuous, I'd say there's an IQ maximum to being a pundit...
Yes, news media pundits, discussing blowback is exactly the same as saying God let 9/11 happen because he didn't like the feminists, homos and wiccans.

    Oh, Suze Orman...
I've never given much of a listen to Suze Orman's financial advice but reading this bit from a Larry King interview makes me less likely:

ORMAN: …No bones about it, I want a Democrat to win.

KING: Now, why? Historically, I thought Republicans helped the economy.

ORMAN: Yes. But, you know, I’m more than just somebody for the economy. I’m somebody for the people. And I have a true belief that, you know, that Senator Clinton or Barack Obama - Senator Obama - would be more helpful.

Especially for somebody like me. I mean it is'it is no secret that, you know, I’m in a same sex relationship and have been for a long time. And I would like to see a president give the rights for somebody like me to be able to leave my partner all the money I’ve accumulated without estate tax.

Okay, I'm glad to hear her talk about the economic benefits opposite sex couples take for granted but agreeing to "Republicans help the economy" in this age? After Regan we had Bush Sr's recession and then the only way Bush Jr. avoided a recession was by essentially creating the current housing crisis.

    By the way...
My current Year in Gay Geek list, anyone think of something that should be on it?

    1. DC/Homophobia controversies
    - Alex Ross & Obsidian (which was late last year, but worth mentioning in...)
    - crotchgate
    - Batwoman series quietly dropped
    - Chuck Dixon: BatO and past history, including Connor Hawke inning comment

    2. Dr Who/Torchwood
    - TW, biggest BBCA show ever
    - RTD most influential gay according to list I'll have to google up
    - rumors, rumors, rumors, including a RTD exit for Moffat (gay friendly but more inclined to writing about lesbians)

    3. overview of Parthenon on Who Wants to be a Superhero

    4. Heroes
    - that whole mess with Zach
    - lesbian cheerleader disappears after 1 ep
    - HoYay fans acknowledged at Comic-Con (so we ever getting text to go with the subtext?)
    - exit of Bryan Fuller

    5. Gays in sci fi TV
    - Sci Fi channel got marginally gayer with BSG Razor and Tin Man
    - OTOH, Lost apparently outed a dead character with a flashback where his sister hurls homophobic jokes at him. Makes me long for the days of "Is this because I'm a lesbian?"

    6. videogame news
    - upcoming gay-inclusive games built hype: Eternity's Child, Fallout 3 and Fable 2
    - good god, does any MMO have a queer community who gets the word out as City of Heroes?

    7. Dumbledore

    8. DOS attack on GayGamer.net

    9. Perry Moore/Hero
    - book hype spurred controversy with Moore's reaction to Northstar's death
    - Who Cares About the Death of a Gay Superhero list

    Ranty rant
Argh! Okay, so I'm trying to put together a "year in gay geek" post about ten highlights from gay... uhm, geekiness (which translates to comics/scifi/gaming) which means reading a years worth of a few blogs that are likely to tackle those topics. I think I've already read too damn many posts about that damned Mary Jane statue (and maybe it got mixed in with other statues, it's a floating BINGO card, really) and I just might have to punch the next gay man I see trying to claim that gay porn proves that pornography is ever demeaning.

First off, yes there is gay porn that demeans gay men. Check out stuff featuring some of the massively hyped "gay-for-pay" performers who work at looking disinterested and act like they'll walk off the set if their gay co-performer ever acts like he wants some attention in return. Thankfully, I think that trend ended, but I'm not sure. At least in the current batch of gay porn with "straight" men, they act like they're enjoying themselves... at least they do in the most popular sites.

Second, I'm basing this entirely off of one guy's word but I have a bisexual friend who finds the difference between gay porn and straight porn shocking, with straight porn being demeaning to women in a way that gay porn doesn't demean its bottoms. Then again, one factor there is that he's a Kinsey 5 type of bisexual and he pays a little more attention to the gay porn he buys (where his purchases involve a little bit of research) than the straight porn (which is usually purchased out of the bargain bin). (Or to put it another way, he may watch straight porn but he gave me a blank look when I mentioned Jenna Jamison.)

Third, yes there are sexually titillating figures, dolls, statues whatever for gay men out there but when I regularly browsed the shops in the Castro (where the video stores aren't shy about putting a giant poster for gay porn in their front window) but I can't recall seeing any with the creepiness level of that Mary Jane statue or any other creepy item aimed at fanboys. A Tom of Finland statue is a statue of someone who clearly enjoys sex and doesn't care if you come along for the ride or not. I'd say the same about the Joe Boys magnets or Billy dolls. They're all items I could understand if someone were to empathize with the figure or fantasize about them... or maybe even both... I dunno, maybe I'm wrong but do women fantasize about being able to bend their back in a way that let's them show off their tits and ass at once?

I mean, I could see the argument being approached if the topic were how anything sexy were demeaning, but the topic is on specific statues. Gay porn proves nothing at that point and the people claiming otherwise are being deliberately clueless to keep making their point.

    Aaargh!

    You are The Hierophant

    Divine Wisdom. Manifestation. Explanation. Teaching.

All things relating to education, patience, help from superiors. The Hierophant is often considered to be a Guardian Angel.

The Hierophant's purpose is to bring the spiritual down to Earth. Where the High Priestess between her two pillars deals with realms beyond this Earth, the Hierophant (or High Priest) deals with worldly problems. He is well suited to do this because he strives to create harmony and peace in the midst of a crisis. The Hierophant's only problem is that he can be stubborn and hidebound. At his best, he is wise and soothing, at his worst, he is an unbending traditionalist.

You all *DO* realize that there is a set of MALE arms strung up next to Black Cat (that’s Black Cat, right)?

Yes, and The Thing proves that male costumes are just as skimpy as superheroines' costumes.

Man, some days I want to pretend the only comic publishers around are Viz, Del Rey, Oni and SLG.

    Oh piffle
Chris Wallace apparently thinks that not having your debates on Fox is 'playing to the extreme left' and then says it'd be like Republicans refusing to work with The New York Times or MSNBC. Yeah, because Fox tilts to the right as far as MSNBC tilts to the left. Oh, that extremist lefty Tucker Carlson and his willingness to enforce Bob Schrum's media narratives.

Wallace is so stuck far in a "it's outrageous liberal bias if you're not reporting the Republicans' talking points word-for-word" bubble.

    So... City of Heroes
Stayed up late last night doing the Synapse TF with my Kinetics defender. Forgot how nifty Kinetics can get, I love passing the speed boost around and buffing my team at the foes' expense. Even the kinetics heal (frustrating when your team spreads out during a battle) makes for a neat challenge.

Since her secondary is electric, I'm still wondering if there's any potential in slotting her towards the Endurance Reductions. Since both sets have END reducers, it could be something different to bring to a team... or a team full of damage dealers could negate anything gained.

I understand part of the excitement over inventions is that there will be new enhancements. I hope I'll be able to boost Siphon Power's damage buff and debuffs, in that case.

    Grumpiness rising...
Things I learned from people commenting on the Imus kerfuffle:

    1) The people offended by Imus' slur aren't offended by rappers calling women "hos"
    2) Actually, all African-Americans loooove it when rappers call women "hos" and are therefore being hypocritical when Imus uses the same word and is criticized for it.
    3) Because of their checkered pasts, if Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton question's someone's racial sensitivity, there's no issue. Since everyone offended is taking their cues from Jackson, Sharpton or both (and not thinking for themselves) they're holding Imus to special standards.
    4) If African-American artists use racist language to comment about racism, that makes the language okay.

    oooh! a TV meme!
    via Morchades

Name your top six TV shows right now, before reading the questions.

    1. 30 Rock
    2. The Office
    3. Ugly Betty
    4. The Daily Show
    5. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
    6. Battlestar Galactica

    1. Who is your favourite character from #2 (The Office)?

Pam, because I empathize with the way she realizes everyones faults and tries to work with them. Her mediocrity is something that also hits on my fears of being mediocre from making safe choices.

    2. Who is your least favourite character from #4 (The Daily Show)?
Gah. Can I switch this to an easier question? Can I count Cheyney as a Daily Show character? What about CNN's Rick Sanchez?

    3. What would a crossover between #1 (30 Rock) and #5 (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia) include?

Oh, an easy one. Danny DeVito somehow gets involved in a business deal with Jack Doneghy, forcing Liz Lemon's crew to work with Charlie, Mac, Dennis and Dee. Wackiness ensues, Mac says something to offend Tracey, Tracey does something that offends Charlie, everyone ends up hating Dennis.

    4. Who is your favourite ship from #6 (Battlestar Galactica)?

I do appreciate all the speculation that Lee's annoying traits could be solved by locking him in a supply closet with Anders (or Gaeta or Helo) until shagging ensues.

    5. If you were to set one person from #3 (Ugly Betty) and one person from #6 (Galactica) on a blind date, who would they be?

It would be fun to see the befuddled looks Gaius would have juggling the taunting from the Number Six in his head while on a date with Alexis Meade.

    6. If you could meet one person from #4 (The Daily Show) and spend the day with them, who would it be, and what would you do?

Oh, it's the easy answer but I'd have Jon Stewart over for dinner.

    7. If you could change one thing about #2 (The Office)'s plot line, what would you change?

I probably would have fired Michael for several episodes instead of keeping him in "Branch Closing"

    8. Explain a relationship between two people (not necessarily romantic) from show #5 (Always Sunny), and why you like the relationship between them.

I do enjoy the relationship between Dennis and Dee, both tend to think themselves as being better than their sibling, but they totally deserve each other.

    9. If the lead title characters (first name in the credits) from #1 (30 Rock) and #3 (Ugly Betty) were both drowning, and you could only save one, who would it be?

Oh, unfair! Liz Lemon or Betty Suarez? I guess Betty makes the world better around her while Liz just tries to survive her world, so Betty. Then again, lead telenovela characters never die so saving Liz would only lead to a shocking "Reports of my death..." scene for Betty. Then again, would not saving her turn Betty evil?

    10. If you could change the title characters' order in the credits for #4 (The Daily Show), what order would you choose?

Could I retitle it "The Daily Show... Craig Kilborn free since 2001"?

    11. If you were able to add a new character, any kind of character you wanted, to the storyline for #6 (Battlestar Galatica), what would the character be like, and what would their role be?

Poor Felix always seems to be so alone as the only military character who seems to be book-learned. It would be interesting to bring a more egotistical version of him onto the Bridge.

    12. What happens in your favourite episode of show #2 (The Office)?

After Michael repeats a Chris Rock routine, the office is forced to have a diversity training session led by The Daily Show's Senior Black Correspondent. I wish Kelly slapped Michael more often.

    13. If you could kill off one of the characters in #1 (30 Rock), who would it be and how would you do it?

Most likely Jack... A rumor flies around the office that he fell down an elevator shaft to his death, but it turns out he was only dodging a pitch meeting with David E. Kelley.

    14. If you got the chance to visit the set for either show #3 (Ugly Betty) or show #5 (Always Sunny), which would you choose?

How could anyone resist "Star Trek bridge gone totally gay"? Plus there's the ogle-worthy Christopher Gorham (who, somehow, is always much cuter when the costumers are geeking him up a bit instead of trying to pitch him as a hottie). Also, I suspect the Betty crew are easier to relax around (despite their crazy schedule) while I'd feel heavy pressure to be witty on the set of Sunny.

"Elections have consequences, so I make the rules."
Would it be sexist for me to admit that whenever I hear Barbara Boxer speak I think of don't-mess-with-me matriarch characters from soap operas like Rachel Cory, Raven Whitney, Lisa Miller Hughes or Kay Chandler? (And why were the only characters of that type I liked came from P&G soaps, aside from Kay Chandler, who I suspect has been eased into the 'wisened senior' role?)

That certainly came to mind when I heard her (basically) tell James Inhofe to STFU, except for saying it her own special way.

I do wish all the talk wondering if the USA is ready for a female President were focused on Boxer instead, because that'd make getting behind a candidate very simple for me.

You scored as Idealist. Idealism centers around the belief that we are moving towards something greater. An odd mix of evolutionist and spiritualist, you see the divine within ourselves, waiting to emerge over time. Many religious traditions express how the divine spirit lost its identity, thus creating our world of turmoil, but in time it will find itself and all things will again become one.

I can't wait for my website to be fixed to post this one...
Just as I give up on the idea of My Name is Earl brining the funny it originally did (I figured I'd stick around for the characters), it delivers three hysterical episodes, staring with the perfectly-titled "Our Cops! is on!"

The most recent episode mixed the laughs with a big 'ole nerdgasm. Not only did it name-check the Television without Pity forums, but the shout-out was forshadowed on the TWoP forums. Even better, there was further forshadowing to notice, as well as a follow-up post.

Not missing a beat, Television without Pity is conducting a WhoJackie Memorial Charity Drive.

Don't miss out when TWoP posters share their e-mails with Joy.

    Woo-hoo!
I got to work this morning and was greeted by a surprise wish list package from Amazon. The shipment includes the Profit DVD (I can't wait to see the pilot again, having seen all the other episodes a few years back, thanks to Trio) and an Alton Brown book (a good source for kitchen basics).

Most exciting was Auto Da Fay, a memoir by Fay Weldon. In college I would have told you that Weldon was my favorite writer (nowadays I'm not sure if I can pick one writer out as a favorite). I frequently found her writing to be compelling. The first Weldon novel I read, The Life and Loves of a She-Devil still makes me contemplate my own values.

I think the most interesting thing I've heard Weldon say was, "I am called a feminist, by people who are not." That sums up my perception of her. She seems to like not matching easy definitions. I do consider her a feminist writer, but not for the reasons I usually see mentioned in papers about Weldon (they say her unsympathetic male characters mark her as a feminist, I usually find her heroines unsympathetic as well and wonder if those essayists are revealing their own sexism in that critism.)

In recent years, Weldon's books have become less compelling to me. I liked her best in her experimental phase where she was exploring what she could do in different genres. Her more recent books have been more entertaining than thought provoking...still readable but not the stuff I reflect on like I do with She-Devil, The Cloning of Joanna May and Darcy's Utopia. I'm looking forward to reading her memoirs and to try to match this woman's life with her amazing writing.

So it turns out that San Francisco Magazine has dubbed my developing neighborhood as either "Uptown Oakland" or "Oaklamsterdam". I hate it when magazines try to make up names to go along with the trend they just made up.

(Though I do appreciate what the article could to for my property's value. Hopefully, too, it's a sign that actual businesses will be showing up in the neighborhood. I'm tired of walking past all those empty storefronts.)

I just want the bloody Whole Foods to open so I can buy groceries without having to carry them for a half mile.

    Woo-hoo! It's geek lunch day!
It's been ages but my gang o' comic pals are meeting for lunch today to do our usual dish about comics (and probably politics, there's some O'Riley-mocking to do today, as well as some Gropenfurer-mocking) and trade interesting comics.

I'm loaning out Villains United (really good until the end), Day of Vengence (okay, even at the end), Fables, Y:The Last Man, Runaways and the surprisingly-good Young Avengers.

I'm also gonna try to push Death Note, because I really, really liked the first volume. They're not a manga-friendly bunch, but Death Note inspires that kind of fanaticsm in me.

Me, I'm getting a copy of the Top Ten OGN as well as Thingy Blah-Blah number two.

    Oh, happy day!
Quick thought... my favorite candidate, "Vote no for all of the initiatives and maybe that'll stop the initiative process from being abused." won the day in California. Most of the people I talked with found one or two initiatives they supported hesitantly, whether that be redistricting, parental notification for abortion or (in my case) energy re-regulation but no one I knew had much enthusiasm for the special election's issues... which makes these results not such a surprise... well, in hindsight it's not such a surprise. I was a tad worried things might go differently.
